Have you ever imagined that, at a certain moment, a crack in history might quietly open, and a translucent, glistening lychee could carry you back to the dreamlike grandeur of the Tang Dynasty? Over a thousand years ago, in order to win a single smile from the imperial consort, lychees from the southwestern frontier were rushed day and night, braving dust and distance, just to reach the palace in Chang’an. In Ma Boyong’s novel The Lychee of Chang’an, this is not merely a legendary tale of a "thousand-mile fruit delivery," but also a profound exploration of institutional structures — a vivid spectacle of power, desire, and the survival wisdom of ordinary people.

This edition of Go Reading will present a brand-new format combining "book sharing" with "script murder" gameplay! Jointly organized by XJTLU Library and the Readers' Association, the 5th Reading Club session (40th in total) cordially invites you to join us on a journey through the thousand-year story of Chang'an. During the event, we will assume the roles of Tang Dynasty censors, couriers, local officials, and even imperial concubines - through this experiential approach, history will vividly come to life. Through the collision of different narratives, we will collectively explore: Is a single lychee truly worth such tremendous effort? How does an individual find their place within the massive imperial machinery?
