It has been over three months since the mathematical community started to prepare its bookshelves. The final project was officially completed at 13:00 on April 3th, 2012. Combined with the major specialty of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), the shelves are intended to facilitate XJTLU students with professional mathematical materials, which will contribute to the further exploration of mathematics for them.
At the initial stage of implementation, this program gained strong support from not only the library but also the professors of Mathematics and Physics Teaching Centre. Also worth noticing is the fact that all the books and magazines on display are recommended by the professors of Mathematics and Physics Teaching Centre. There are monographs which combine interesting and professional expertise like "A Story of ‘e’ - the Legend of a Constant” and “Typical problems and solutions in Advanced Mathematics", academic journals in the field of mathematics like "College Mathematics", "Research for Advanced Mathematics", and "Mathematical Culture", as well as "Synchronous Counseling of Mathematical Textbooks", which is self-published by the mathematical community. In addition, particular materials are also available, which are provided for graduates’ postgraduate study. Dr. Gang Liu attended the inauguration ceremony as a representative of Mathematics and Physics Teaching Centre. He expressed his appreciation for the mathematical community bookshelf and higher expectations for the mathematical community. (Fig.1)
Notably, the event is the first collaboration between the mathematical community and the library. Due to the cooperation, the library finds a shelter for the bookshelves of the mathematical community, which provides students with a place to read math books and periodicals. Meanwhile, the mathematical community bookshelves enrich the resources of the library, and extend the knowledge platform.
Yanping Tang, a student from the information group of the mathematical community, took the main responsibility for the event. She said that it was such a happy thing to see the final result though there existed twists and turns during the preparation process of the shelves, "I really hope the bookshelves will bring practical help to students' mathematical study. And we will regularly update the books and magazines on the shelves in order to provide first-hand resources for all the staff." Besides, the bookshelves are placed in duplicate in Wisdom Hall of B1 and Raise Hall of B2 respectively. In addition, the books must be read in the library but not borrowed. We welcome all the students to come and read.
